I unbolted at the downpipe and fired it up so I could have video evidence for doing a muffler delete (I'm assuming it'll sound similar but not so damn *loud*). It was badass.

That sounds really good actually.
I swear GM has been using that same door chime since forever.

I often work on my American FWD barges shirtless.

I know! My Uncles Camaro has the same one. That's always bugged me.

It was 98 outside and pushing 110 in my garage, plus the car was just run so the exhaust was hot. Of course, I did drop a hot bolt onto my abs which hurt quite bad...

It's better than the weird high-pitched squealing that comes from my van.
In dad's truck you can turn the chime volume all the way down :D its great.

Sounds like "insert generic inner city car with exhaust leak" here. I am not trolling, I had a 97 LeSabre I converted from the stock 2.25" exhaust to the earlier gen 1 2.5" exhaust, and tried several mufflers at the back - a flowmaster F body single 2.5" in/dual 2.5" outlet 80 series, a Flowtech Afterburner single in/out, a Dynomax thrush single in/out, a glasspack, and a Park Ave Ultra stock muffler, single 2.5" in, single 2.25" out. I ended up running the Park Ave Ultra muffler. The 3800 series ii, like any of the GM passenger car single exhaust v6's, gets super raspy at higher rpms. If you just want to annoy people, it works, but I'd use a free flowing but quieter muffler on it personally. At 205 hp, flow is not exactly a concern.

it sounds like every 90's 3xxx series GM car with a hole in the muffler.

I honestly don't see how it sounds bad... I never revved it over 3 grand with the exhaust disconnected like this but it was really bassy and full and sounded a lot more respectable than the angry-bees-in-a-weedwacker fourbangers with fart cannons that are commonplace around here.
Unless the raspiness you're referring to is the hoarse snapping and crackling as it revs back down.

It sounds better than a 4 banger, granted. It sounds like a dump truck compared to, say any 32 valve v8 w/ a nice exhaust. If you drive it around sounding like that, people are not going to be thinking, wow that guy's car sounds great, they are going to wince and think, please buy a new muffler. Been there, done that, had that engine. I ran a 15.89 in the 1/4 mile with the 2.86 axle ratio in my old LeSabre. For a not at all performance car, they really do run a lot stronger than other similar large v6 cars of the era. But that is not an engine that is going to sound great w/a loud exhaust on it. I kinda tried that. With, and without a resonator upstream of the various mufflers I swapped in.

Worth noting it'll sound better with the resonator and cat back on it minus their very good friend the muffler.

huh? I am many years and many cars past when I owned my LeSabre. It was my first car when i was 16 years old. It had 23,000 miles on it when I got it. The glasspack did sound the worst though. Glasspacks always sound like shit, they flap and fart and add a lot of coloration to the exhaust tone. The flowmaster 80 series on the 3800 sounded cool at idle but sounded hollow and horrible at higher rpms though, and had a huge resonant peak like most flowmasters do. I was 16 and didn't know any better back then. I am comparing how that sounded to my two 32 valve v8 powered cars now. More than a little different in tone.

I had that on my 2002 Envoy. It literally beeped so loudly and quickly it sounded like one long beep. I'm pretty sure that may be a factor to why I used to have migraines.

So which one sounded "best" to you?

My long term choice was the stock Park Ave ultra muffler, which was pretty much stock quiet, but fit the larger 2.5" mid pipe I ran from an early 1990s LeSabre. I got sick of the noise after a few years so I went and found the Park Ave muffler from a junkyard car, and welded that on. The least annoying aftermarket muffler I ran was the Dynomax thrush muffler (i bought the longest case that would fit to keep the noise down). That was still overall very quiet but did have some noticeable tone when you got on it. The Flowtech Afterburner was significantly louder than stock or the Thrush but was tolerable. The flowmaster was crazy annoying and so was the glasspack. I would try anything other than a glasspack or a flowmaster if you want to make some noise over stock....mufflers are personal taste.

Hmm. I must not have any taste because I always thought flowmasters on 3800s sounded awesome. I mostly just got sick of being able to hear my engine more than my exhaust, and when autocrossing I can't hear a damn thing of my car even when nobody else is running. Perhaps if I could find the stock muffler off of a Grand Prix or something that sounded pretty tasty stock...
